Creative Futures Selfridges Window Installation.
Our brief was to create a piece of work in one of the
Selfridges Store windows in London's Oxford Street, the work had to be visually engaging and
employ an element of public interaction.
Oxford Street is one of the busiest streets in London and therefore one of the nosiest.
It seemed suitable to monitor this noise pollution that exists there. With the aid of a clever electronic device the Window Payne was turned into a large microphone which picked up 4 tonal frequencies,
sub-base, mid-tones, base and high-pitched tones. With the aid of a bespoke computer application the 4 tones were turned into CMYK percentages then this information was automatically sent to a large format Epson ink-jet printer which printed out a colour bar that corresponded to the noise frequencies it was receiving at the time. The printer was in action 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a month, the public were encouraged to interact by making there own sounds to change the colour bars.
